Description

Starboard Roamer 14' x 28.5"
Rigid expedition SUP

An expedition board inspired by racing.

The Roamer is designed for those who dream of going further. Inspired by the winning DNA of Starboard's All Star range and developed in collaboration with expedition paddler Bruce Kirkby, it combines speed and efficiency with the stability, capacity, and seaworthiness required for true exploration.

Its stability relies on several complementary elements: a concave center section, high rails, a lowered deck, and generous volume at the extremities. This design allows for paddling with gear over long distances, even when conditions turn choppy.

Technical details of the Starboard Roamer

Inspired by the All Star

The racing-inspired hydrodynamics derived from the All Star ensure efficient glide, excellent tracking, and constant speed over long distances, even when the board is heavily loaded.

Reduced nose rocker

The low longitudinal curvature of the bow increases the effective waterline length. This design promotes a smoother, faster glide, especially on flat water, by limiting the energy required to maintain speed.

High side rails

The high rails provide significant secondary stability, i.e., better resistance to lateral tipping. They help maintain control in chop, currents, and rough conditions.

Front and rear bungee systems

The front and rear bungee straps create flexible cargo zones, allowing for the secure transport of camping gear, food, safety equipment, or dry bags.
Large lowered cargo platform

Located in front of the standing area, this flat, recessed platform allows heavy gear to be positioned lower and close to the central axis. It thus helps to limit their effect on the center of gravity and preserve the board's stability.

Integrated drainage system

Two drain holes (scuppers), combined with a central concave channel, allow for quick water evacuation from the deck, thereby reducing water weight and maintaining paddle efficiency.

Thick nose volume

Increased volume in the front allows the board to ride better over waves and chop, reducing the risk of nose-diving and fatigue during long crossings.

Boxy rails with chamfered edges

Reduces the risk of rolling and water infiltration on the deck. The chamfered rail improves speed and stability.

Lowered standing area

The recessed deck brings the paddler's feet closer to the waterline, lowering the center of gravity, improving balance and control during long sessions and when carrying expedition gear.

Flat tail rocker and stabilizing side planes

The tail geometry promotes a cleaner, smoother water release, reducing wake and improving glide efficiency. The flat side surfaces increase control and the board's overall stability.

Front water deflector

Integrated into the bow, the deflector diverts water spray to the sides rather than toward the standing area. This contributes to the paddler's comfort and helps keep gear less exposed to spray, especially in wind and chop.

Rounded tail

A smooth, rounded tail releases cleanly on flat water and ensures a smooth transition in downwind or following sea conditions, maintaining control and glide.

XTEC Carbon D2 Construction

Developed for long distances and carrying heavy loads, the XTEC Carbon D2 aims to balance lightness, strength, and glide efficiency.

The D2 technology optimizes the internal structure to reduce total weight while maintaining an outer shell resistant to impacts. Strategic reinforcements protect areas particularly exposed during launches, landings, and movement on various types of shorelines.

This construction includes:

  • A lightweight structure for easy transport and efficient glide.

  • Reinforcements in the standing area, rails, bow, and tail.

  • An outer shell designed for better impact resistance.

  • A structure adapted for paddling with expedition gear.

Carbon Load Frame Technology

The Carbon Load Frame technology contributes to the board's structural reinforcement, particularly on the rails. Combined with the other reinforcements of the XTEC Carbon D2 construction, it aims to maintain the strength and reliability of the whole assembly during prolonged use with gear.

The goal is to achieve a board that is light enough to preserve its glide performance, yet robust enough for the demands of touring and expedition paddling.

Who is the Starboard Roamer for?

The Roamer is aimed at paddlers looking for a high-performance rigid board for long-distance touring, SUP camping, and multi-day expeditions.

Its racing-inspired shape sets it apart from more traditional touring boards, while its lowered deck, cargo areas, and 130 kg capacity make it possible to plan self-supported trips with more equipment.

It is particularly suitable for intermediate to experienced paddlers who wish to prioritize distance, glide efficiency, and stability under load, rather than occasional use over short distances.
